Beverley Callard has revealed she 'completely crashed emotionally' after catching sight of her body in the mirror ahead of a radiotherapy session. The 69-year-old actress, best known for playing Liz McDonald on Coronation Street, was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer in February and has since undergone surgery.
In a video posted to Instagram on Saturday, Callard explained that she had booked a Botox appointment to boost her confidence before returning to work. However, while preparing for the appointment, she caught a glimpse of herself and was overwhelmed. 'I completely crashed emotionally and just thought…Oh my God, I look like a freak,' she said, adding that she knows others are worse off but still struggled.
Despite her initial distress, Callard attended the appointment and met Dr Sarah Walsh, whom she described as a 'friend for life'. The consultation lifted her spirits, and she said: 'I just felt that the universe and the Gods are smiling on me, and I feel so much better.' She ended the day feeling positive, even after indulging in carrot cake.
Callard, who also starred in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps and I'm A Celebrity...South Africa, first revealed her diagnosis on RTE's Late Late Show in February. She said she received the news just minutes before filming her new role on Fair City, adding: 'My head was a bit mashed for the first few days. It's very early stages.'
