Ant and Dec Pull Podcast Ad After Suicide Imagery Backlash
Ant and Dec apologise for 'insensitive' podcast advert

Beloved television presenters Ant and Dec have been forced to issue a public apology and swiftly remove an advertisement for their upcoming podcast after it was criticised for featuring imagery deemed suggestive of suicide.

Promotional Video Sparks Immediate Outcry

The controversy began on Monday 19 January 2026, when the Geordie duo posted a promotional clip on their social media channels to launch their new series, Hanging Out with Ant and Dec. The video showed the pair appearing to hang from a washing line, with the initial shot focusing on their feet dangling in mid-air.

Within hours, viewers and mental health advocates raised serious concerns. Many argued the visual was "incredibly insensitive" and could be deeply upsetting, particularly for those affected by suicide. Former X Factor contestant and mental health advocate Katie Waissel led the criticism, calling the ad "triggering, insensitive and frankly reckless."

Mental Health Charities and Public Condemnation

The non-profit organisation Mind, Body & Sole also urged the presenters to withdraw the advert. In a statement on X, they said it showed a "lack of judgement and thoughtfulness" given the pair's vast audience, and was especially hurtful to families bereaved by suicide.

While some social media users responded with humour, the overwhelming reaction was one of disappointment. One observer questioned how the promotional material was approved, posting: "Did absolutely nobody check what the still image looked like before they pressed send?"

Swift Removal and Apology Issued

Facing the growing backlash, Ant and Dec acted quickly. The advert was pulled from all platforms just hours after it was first posted.

The pair subsequently released a formal statement expressing their regret. "We did not mean to cause any offence with this promo video and we are sorry if it has upset anyone," they said. "We have taken on board the comments and have deleted the video."

The podcast itself, which promises unscripted conversations between the two TV stalwarts, is still scheduled to launch on 22 January. The incident marks a rare misstep for the presenters, who have been national treasures since their early days on children's show Byker Grove and currently host ITV's I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!
