Tragic Collision Claims Two Lives on George Street
A community in Sydney's upper north shore is in mourning after a devastating incident on Friday evening claimed the lives of a pregnant woman and her unborn baby. The 33-year-old victim, who was eight months pregnant, was struck by a vehicle on George Street in Hornsby at approximately 8pm.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Fatal Incident
According to New South Wales Police, the tragic chain of events began when the driver of a Kia Carnival, a 48-year-old man, slowed at an entrance to allow the woman to cross. At that moment, his vehicle was allegedly rear-ended by a white BMW driven by a 19-year-old man displaying P-plates.
The impact forced the Kia Carnival to roll forward, striking the pedestrian. Emergency services arrived promptly, with paramedics providing critical treatment at the scene before rushing the woman to Westmead Hospital. Despite their efforts, both she and her unborn baby tragically succumbed to their injuries.
Police Investigation and Charges Laid
Both drivers involved in the collision were uninjured and taken to Hornsby Hospital for mandatory testing. The investigation moved quickly, resulting in the arrest of the 19-year-old BMW driver at a Wahroonga home in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The teenager now faces serious charges including dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving (occasioning death), and causing the loss of a foetus - death of a pregnant woman. He is scheduled to appear at Parramatta Local Court.
Police have appealed to the public for any information, dashcam footage, or mobile phone video that could assist with their investigation into this heartbreaking traffic accident.
