A new mother has sparked debate after revealing that her own mother accused her of "ruining the family" by giving her daughter a Welsh middle name. The woman, from the US, shared her story on Reddit, explaining that her daughter has a "classic" first name with a standard spelling, chosen by her young son.
The middle name, Eirlys, meaning snowdrop, was selected to honour her husband's Welsh heritage. "We found the name Eirlys, meaning snowdrop, a resilient little flower associated with the arrival of spring and hope," she wrote. The name also coincided with the end of a particularly snowy winter.
However, when the woman told her mother the baby's full name, the reaction was far from positive. Her mother called it "stupid" and even claimed she was "ruining the name of her sister" – the baby's first name is shared with the woman's late aunt, who died of cancer. The new mum hung up the phone.
An apology later came, with the grandmother saying she was "taken aback" and that they had "different tastes in names". But the mother remains concerned that she has "burdened" her daughter with a rare, non-English middle name that Americans may struggle to pronounce.
Commenters on the post rallied to her defence. One wrote: "I love the way an English name is so lovely and normal, but a Welsh name is foreign, despite the countries being next to each other and having a lot of shared heritage. Wales isn't Narnia, Wonderland, or Hobbiton." Another pointed out: "My mother has never even asked what my kids' middle names are."
Others shared similar experiences, with one noting that her daughter's middle name Aisling has never caused issues, and another saying a nephew named Alyosha, aged 27, is now accepted by everyone. The consensus appears to be that a middle name, particularly one honouring family heritage, is unlikely to cause lasting problems.
