A harrowing case of child neglect has concluded at Wolverhampton Crown Court, revealing a deeply distressing incident that unfolded in Walsall. A 24-year-old mother, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, has been sentenced after her newborn baby was found abandoned in a plastic bag next to an open window.
The court heard how the infant was discovered by a concerned neighbour who heard cries. The baby, just hours old, was found in a critical condition, exposed to the elements. Emergency services were immediately called to the scene.
In a moment of raw emotion during the hearing, the young mother addressed the judge, stating, "I am so sorry for what I did." Her defence barrister, Mr. Simon Williams, outlined a tragic background of "severe emotional difficulties" and a "complete lack of family support" that contributed to her desperate actions.
