Actress Lily Collins has candidly shared the difficulties she faced balancing life as a new mother with the demanding filming schedule for the upcoming fifth season of the hit Netflix series, Emily in Paris.
Juggling Motherhood and a Leading Role
The 36-year-old star, who welcomed her first child—a baby girl—via surrogacy with her husband, film director Charlie McDowell, in January, insisted she is navigating the same challenges as any new parent. Filming for the popular comedy-drama commenced in May in Rome, later moving to Paris in the summer, placing significant demands on the first-time mum.
In a recent interview, Collins told The Sun: "You have a different purpose and it's really tough... It's a struggle and I'm just so grateful to be able to do both." She openly requested understanding from colleagues, admitting, "I said to everyone this year, 'I'm really good with memorisation, I'm really good with knowing my lines, but this year give me some grace. I've not slept, I'm very tired and I may not be on my game'."
Season 5 Plot and Cast Shake-Up
Netflix released a new trailer earlier this month, building anticipation for the season's launch on December 18. The preview shows Emily adjusting to her new life in Rome, with heart-to-heart moments featuring Gabriel, played by Lucas Bravo. A key scene shows Gabriel boarding a train, fuelling speculation about his future on the show following his character's split from Emily.
The season's official synopsis reveals Emily, now head of Agence Grateau Rome, will face professional and romantic challenges, with a work idea backfiring and a big secret threatening a close relationship.
This season also follows a significant cast departure. Earlier this year, French actress Camille Razat, who played Camille, announced she had quit the series. In an emotional Instagram post, the 31-year-old stated her character's storyline had "naturally come to an end." Co-star Lily Collins responded with support, writing, "Love you sister. It’s been a wild ride and an absolute pleasure."
A New Chapter On and Off Screen
Collins, the daughter of musician Phil Collins, has embraced a transformative year, becoming a mother while leading one of Netflix's most recognisable franchises. Her honest discussion about the struggle to balance a newborn with a high-profile career resonates with many working parents.
With a new city setting in Rome, a major cast change, and the star's personal journey into motherhood, the fifth season of Emily in Paris promises to be its most evolved chapter yet when it streams from December 18.
