Actress Emma Roberts has given a remarkably honest account of her experiences as a mother, revealing she endured 'some dark nights' following the birth of her son. The 34-year-old star graces the December front cover of Harper's Bazaar Spain, where she reflected on the profound impact of parenthood.
The Emotional Landscape of Motherhood
Roberts welcomed her son, Rhodes Robert Hedlund, in December 2020 with her former partner, actor Garrett Hedlund. The couple parted ways two years later. As her son approaches his fifth birthday this month, Roberts described motherhood as a transformative force. 'Motherhood has given me so much depth in my emotions and understanding, both personally and professionally,' she shared.
She finds inspiration in viewing the world through her child's eyes, a perspective she says beautifully alters her own. However, she was equally open about the challenges, stating, 'I've had some dark nights postpartum.' Roberts explained that she channels these complex emotions into her creative work, finding the process 'interesting.' She admits she is still discovering her identity both as a person and as a parent, striving to do her best despite the inevitable stumbles.
Balancing Career and Family Life
Her approach to acting has evolved significantly since becoming a mother. While she pursued projects strategically in her twenties, she is now far more selective. 'Now, with a five-year-old, I'm more selective about what I accept because filming means spending a lot of time away from my family,' Roberts explained. She emphasised the importance of maintaining a life outside of her profession to prevent work from consuming her.
The actress also runs her own production company and is keen to expand her role in storytelling. She revealed ambitions to step behind the camera and direct, having co-written a short film with the goal of directing it next year. 'I want to tell many more stories,' she stated.
Navigating Love and a Dual-Career Relationship
Roberts also spoke about her relationship with fiancé Cody John, 29, who proposed last year after they went public in August 2022. Acknowledging the potential complications of two actors building a life together, she said, 'Two actors working together can be complicated because you never know when or where you're going to work.'
She described their dynamic as one that breaks routine but can challenge consistency. Ultimately, she credits their strong personal connection as the foundation for their happiness. 'I'm very much in love, my fiancé is a great person, and we have a wonderful connection outside of work, which I think is the most important thing,' Roberts said.
