BBC news presenter Mishal Husain has revealed that her children were subjected to racist abuse during a shopping trip at a Waitrose supermarket near their London home. The incident occurred shortly before she travelled to Pakistan to report on the death of Osama Bin Laden.
According to Husain, an older man told her children to behave 'like proper English children'. She tweeted about the encounter, describing it as a 'joy of the supermarket' moment. Her husband, Meekal Hashmi, added that Husain called for the manager to confront the man, who remained 'belligerently unremorseful'.
The couple praised Waitrose for handling the situation well. A Waitrose spokeswoman expressed regret over the incident, while a BBC spokesman said it was a private matter.
Husain, a Cambridge graduate and one of the BBC's rising stars, has been reporting from Abbottabad, where her father attended school. She has previously been named one of the UK's most powerful Muslim women and describes herself as a 'liberal Muslim'.
