Manchester United have confirmed that Matthijs de Ligt has undergone surgery to address a back injury, ruling him out for the remainder of the season. The Dutch defender has not played since November 30, when he featured against Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
Manager Ruben Amorim initially indicated De Ligt would miss just one game, but the 26-year-old has been sidelined ever since. United announced on Friday that the operation was successful, and De Ligt is now expected to be fit for the start of next season.
De Ligt expressed his gratitude for the support he has received during a difficult period, stating his determination to return as soon as possible. He had been keen to avoid surgery and hoped to play again this season, as well as make himself available for the World Cup, but those prospects are now off the table.
The injury has been complex, with good days and bad days affecting his recovery. Before the setback, De Ligt had played every minute of United's Premier League campaign and won the club's player of the month award in November.
His absence has seen Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez start most games in central defence, while Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven have also featured. United are monitoring centre-back options ahead of the summer transfer window, though other areas remain the priority.
