Trem Y Glyn Care Home in Glynneath, once earmarked for closure, has received a glowing review just over a year after being brought under council control. The inspection was carried out by independent regulators at Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) in April 2026.
First Review Under Council Management
It was the first review of the facility since management was taken over by Neath Port Talbot Council in 2025, following years of campaigning from local councillors and the Trem y Glyn Action Group set up to save it. A recent report given to council bosses said areas such as leadership and wellbeing as well as care and support were rated as excellent during the inspection.
The site was also described as being a "safe, clean, accessible and well-maintained home, with suitable facilities, gardens, and robust safety arrangements". It also noted that since Trem Y Glyn's return to council ownership, the service had undergone "significant transformation" including the development of a dedicated reablement unit alongside its residential care provision.
Inspectors Praise Leadership and Staff
The report said: "This is the first inspection undertaken since responsibility for Trem Y Glyn was transferred back to the council. CIW quoted strong, visible leadership and a committed staff team."
"CIW rated wellbeing, care and support, leadership and management as excellent. The environment was rated good, no areas for improvement were identified, and no priority action notices were issued."
Background and Future Plans
The home, located off Park Avenue in Glynneath, was first constructed in 1974, where it provides residential care and support for people aged 65 and older, including those with dementia and other illnesses. Councillors in attendance at a social services scrutiny meeting in September 2026 noted the report, saying it was pleasing to see so many excellent ratings.
Officers said they could also look at expanding the site moving forward, with more information to be brought back to members in the future.
