Ayrshire nursing home graded after unannounced inspection

An unannounced inspection by the Care Inspectorate has resulted in mixed grades for Glebe House Care Home on Cumnock Road in Dalmellington. The service received 'good' ratings for two quality indicators and 'adequate' for three others, following a visit in July.

Key findings from the inspection

Inspectors noted that people living at the home were "well presented" and appeared "content," with staff demonstrating "kind and compassionate practice." However, quality assurance processes were "not always effective" in identifying risks, and improvements were needed to ensure people's needs were accurately assessed and met.

Care planning documentation also required "further work" to "strengthen it," according to the report.

Detailed observations

The Care Inspectorate report stated: "We identified some strengths, but these just outweighed weaknesses." Inspectors observed warm interactions between staff and residents, noting that staff knew people well and responded appropriately. Relatives spoke positively about the care, with one describing staff as "very nice."

However, concerns were raised about weight loss support. The report noted: "Some people required support and observation to prevent weight loss. Documentation was not always accurate, some assessments were incorrect and concerns were not always escalated despite deterioration being recorded. This meant opportunities had been missed to improve the health and wellbeing of people affected."

Skin integrity support was also flagged, with records indicating that although people were assessed, they did not always receive the correct support to prevent skin deterioration. Charts were not consistently completed, and wound care was not always well documented.

Medication management

While medication was "generally well managed" for most people, issues remained. The report said: "The management team had recognised errors in staff administration practices that had resulted in formal proceedings to prevent recurrence. This meant swift action had been taken to ensure people were safe and well. However, we sampled records that indicated errors had continued despite being addressed previously, and that dosage times were not always being adhered to. This placed people at risk of harm."

Grading and requirements

The setting and staff team were both graded 'good,' but leadership, supporting people's wellbeing, and planned care and support achieved only 'adequate.'

One requirement, to be met by October 26, states that bosses must ensure people receive "safe and responsive care" that "meets their needs and promotes their health and wellbeing." Additionally, quality assurance processes must be "carried out effectively" to "achieve improvements" in service delivery and outcomes.

Glebe House Care Home is registered to provide care for up to 44 people, with the service provider being Priory CC151 Limited.
