Peter Duncan, best known for presenting Blue Peter, has shared an update on his cancer treatment, admitting he feels fortunate to have received a less invasive procedure. The 72-year-old was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2019.
Treatment journey revealed on GMB
Appearing on Good Morning Britain, Duncan spoke with Kate Garraway and Adil Ray about undergoing focal therapy. After an MRI confirmed the diagnosis, he discussed options with a doctor. When a prostatectomy was suggested, he recalled that his 'instincts kicked in' and he sought alternatives, knowing the standard surgery can be highly invasive and lead to life-changing side effects.
Through another doctor, he discovered focal therapy, which uses ultrasound technology to precisely target affected cells while sparing healthy tissue. This approach is less invasive and may reduce the risk of complications.
Call for wider availability
When asked why the treatment isn't universally available, Keith Morgan from Prostate Cancer UK described the situation as 'frustrating'. He explained that access depends on location, a disparity campaigners want to change. Currently, only around 1,000 people can receive the therapy, and there are calls for nationwide availability regardless of where patients live.
Reflecting on his own experience, Duncan said: "I was just lucky."
Government funding pledge
The government has recently committed up to £2.8 million to expand focal therapy provision by establishing additional centres. In a statement, Health Innovation and Safety Minister Preet Kaur Gill said: "Everyone deserves access to the best possible treatment, and this government is determined to make that a reality."
