University of Toronto psychology professor Jordan Peterson has sparked controversy by refusing to use gender-neutral pronouns requested by transgender students and staff. Peterson argues that terms like 'they', 'ze', or 'zir' are part of an ideological push by 'social justice warrior, left-wing radical political activists' and that he will not be compelled to use them.
Peterson's stance has led to campus protests and complaints, with the university warning that his refusal could violate Ontario's human rights code, which prohibits discrimination based on gender identity. The university has received complaints that his comments are 'unacceptable, emotionally disturbing and painful'.
Peterson, who has studied authoritarianism for 40 years, says he opposes what he sees as attempts to control language and ideology. He is concerned that proposed federal legislation, Bill C-16, which would extend hate speech protections to transgender people, could criminalize his refusal to use alternative pronouns.
Legal experts, however, say criminal prosecution is unlikely. University of Ottawa law professor Kyle Kirkup notes that while using inappropriate pronouns may not respect transgender rights, it would not lead to a criminal conviction. Peterson could, however, face sanctions under Ontario's human rights code, including fines or mandatory training.
Peterson insists he does not object to transgender people and will use traditional pronouns based on appearance. But he argues that terms like 'gender identity' are too broad and are being used to silence dissent. Colleague Dr. Lee Airton, who uses the pronoun 'they', dismisses Peterson's concerns as alarmist, saying the issue is about accommodating transgender people, not free speech.
