Doctor answers top 5 questions about weight loss pills

Boots Online Doctor has identified and answered the five most common questions about the new Wegovy weight loss tablet, which launched in the UK last month. Data from the service shows that 80% of orders for the tablet have come from customers new to its weight loss treatment, meaning most users have no prior experience with weight loss medication and likely have many questions as they start.

Switching from injections to the pill

Dr Anju Verma, Clinical Lead for Weight Loss at Boots Online Doctor, confirms that switching from Wegovy injections to the tablet is possible, but it must be managed under clinical supervision. Both forms contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide, so the transition depends on the current dose, duration of use, and any side effects experienced.

Appetite changes during transition

Some patients may notice a slight increase in appetite during the switch, but significant weight gain is unlikely if managed correctly. This adjustment phase usually lasts a couple of weeks, with some reporting a temporary appetite increase or a brief plateau in weight loss.

Effectiveness and side effects

Studies show that at its highest dose, the pill is as effective as the injection. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal, such as nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, and vomiting, which are similar to the injection and typically mild to moderate.

How to take the tablet

The tablet is taken once daily after a fast of at least eight hours, usually first thing in the morning. It should be swallowed whole with a small sip of water, and you should wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else.

Long-term use

Dr Verma emphasises that weight loss medications are not a quick fix. Best outcomes are achieved when treatment is combined with healthy lifestyle changes, clinical assessment, patient education, and ongoing medical supervision.

The Wegovy tablet is available via the Boots Online Doctor Weight Loss Treatment service, following an online consultation to check eligibility.
