Swansea Bay University Health Board is set to adapt Croeserw Community Centre in the Afan Valley to provide improved health facilities for the area, after approval from the local council.
The works at the centre could now include the development of a dental facility along with new consultation and treatment rooms.
What the plans include
The village community centre is based in a large two-storey building with an associated car park at Bryn Siriol, where it currently contains a café, hairdresser, offices, and community spaces.
The report said: "With regard to the change of use to the community and enterprise centre, the building currently hosts a mix of community (D class), business (B class), and retail (A class) uses."
"The proposal includes replacing some of the flexible enterprise/incubator enterprise spaces with healthcare (medical and dental) and replacing the ground-floor café/takeaway with a waiting area."
"A space for a hairdresser would be retained as well as some unallocated areas which could be put to a future use."
Temporary building during works
The plans, which were first submitted in June 2026, say the existing 55-space car park would continue to serve the facility.
They added they would also include the erection of a temporary community centre building on the land for a period of 12 months.
This would be used to house offices, a community space, hairdresser, and welfare facilities while the building works are being carried out. The temporary building is proposed to be located on the southern side of the western car park at a lower level from the public highway.
Approval and context
An officer's report said the development would have no detrimental impact on the character and appearance of the surrounding area and would align with the authority's local development plan.
The plans for the change were approved by Neath Port Talbot council officers as part of their delegated decisions made for August and September 2026.
It comes just months after separate proposals for a major road infrastructure scheme in the valley, which could see the realignment of local roads as well as the potential demolition of two bridges.
