A GP practice on the outskirts of Bolton is to close at the end of November 2026. Bolton Community Practice, which operates Ladybridge Surgery on Broadgate, said the practice ‘will need to relocate’ after being notified its tenancy will end on November 30, 2026.
Patient survey and future plans
Earlier this year a survey was carried out to gather feedback on the future of the surgery, which has around 4,500 people on its patient list. A spokesman for Bolton Community Practice said: “Since the survey closed, we have been formally notified that our tenancy at our current premises will end.
“Since receiving this notice, we have been working closely with NHS Greater Manchester and the local estates team to consider the options available. The current building has faced ongoing challenges for a number of years and has been assessed as no longer suitable as a long-term healthcare facility.
Reassurance for patients
“While this means we will need to relocate, it also provides an opportunity to secure modern, fit-for-purpose premises that can better support the needs of our patients now and in the future. We would like to reassure patients and stakeholders that there is no immediate impact on the services we provide. The practice remains fully open and operational.
“Our priority is to maintain access to high-quality GP services and minimise disruption. We are actively exploring alternative premises within the local area, as close to the current site as possible, and are carefully considering the feedback received through our patient survey, which remains extremely valuable.”
Councillor reaction
The practice added that it understood that patients and stakeholders may have questions about what this means for the future of local services. It said it was committed to ‘keeping our community informed and will provide further updates as plans develop and more information becomes available’.
The premises have previously suffered from structural issues and anti-social behaviour and was forced to close for a number of days in 2024 after a leak. Heaton Lostock & Chew Moor councillor Andy Morgan said he was ‘extremely disappointed’ by the announcement and described the surgery as ‘a vital part of our community’.
He said patients ‘quite rightly want certainty about future GP provision’. He added: “My priority is making sure local people continue to have access to high quality GP services as close to Ladybridge as possible, with the minimum disruption. I will be working closely with Bolton’s NHS leaders to secure the best possible outcome for the residents of Ladybridge and everyone who relies on the practice. I’ll continue to keep residents updated as more information becomes available and will make sure your concerns are heard throughout this process.”
Bolton Community Practice runs three other surgeries in Horwich, Little Lever and Waters Meeting Health Centre.
