100 Bikers Grant Dementia-Stricken Mod's Scooter Wish

Over 100 scooter and motorbike riders filled the car park of a Lancashire care home to grant a special wish for an 80-year-old dementia-stricken former mod, leaving him speechless and delighted.

Gordon, a resident at the Care UK home Meadow Croft in Garstang, Preston, rode a red Lambretta scooter in his youth and was an active member of the 1960s mod scene, retaining his love for scooters throughout his life. After he mentioned his former passion to staff, the home posted online asking people to fill its car park with scooters and motorbikes so he could once again be "surrounded by mods, scooters and bikes".

A Day of Roaring Engines and Fond Memories

Clad in a black leather jacket, Gordon was left speechless when 100 vehicles arrived. He connected with the bikers before returning to the seat of a chopper motorbike for a short ride. Afterwards, beaming Gordon said: "I absolutely loved it; it was brilliant. It was a fantastic experience, and I really enjoyed talking to everyone."

His daughter, Catherine, was moved to near tears at the sight and gifted lifestyle manager Jessica Richardson some flowers as a "thank you" for organising, before treating the home's staff to doughnuts. Bikers from Lancashire Police also attended the meet.

Overwhelming Community Response

Jessica said she was "so stunned and overwhelmed" by the turnout, noting there were so many riders at Saturday's event that "you couldn't move" for bikes. She added that Gordon "had the best day" and "couldn't believe everybody turned up for him".

She continued: "Without the response from the community, it wouldn't have been possible. Seeing him so happy was just amazing. Many tears were shed. It was just a perfect day."

Wishing Tree Initiative Fulfils Resident's Dream

The motorbike experience was part of Care UK's Wishing Tree initiative, which enables residents to pursue old hobbies or try something new. Diane Leeming, home manager at Meadow Croft, said: "We had an amazing afternoon sharing Gordon’s passion and learning more about his love of scooters."

She added: "Our Wishing Tree initiative is a wonderful way for residents to share their ambitions, and it’s hugely rewarding to be able to make these a reality. Gordon often speaks of his scooter-riding days, so it was an incredibly special moment to see his face light up when he noticed the motorbikes ride in."

Thanking all the riders, the home said: "What an absolutely amazing turnout! Our lovely resident has had the most incredible day. He has been completely overwhelmed by everyone’s kindness and generosity. He enjoyed every single minute - from meeting so many amazing people to seeing all the scooters and bikes arrive. It truly has been a day he’ll never forget!"
