Sam Thompson Reveals His Three-Question Rule for Managing ADHD in Relationship
Sam Thompson's Three-Question Rule for ADHD Conversations

Sam Thompson has opened up about how he manages his attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) while in a relationship with his girlfriend, Talitha Balinska. The 33-year-old presenter, who was diagnosed with ADHD and autism in 2023, admitted he sometimes struggles to stay fully engaged during conversations with her.

A Three-Question Strategy

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Thompson explained that he has developed a technique to remain present. He said he tries to ask three questions when he feels his attention drifting, even if he is not fully focused. This approach, he believes, helps his partner feel heard. He emphasized that while he loves Talitha very much, his ADHD can cause distractions, leading to an internal monologue that overrides external voices.

Thompson acknowledged that he is not always good at replying to text messages, which has caused minor fallouts with friends. However, he noted that they now understand this is a significant struggle for him. He applies the same three-question rule in friendships and other relationships, and he openly apologizes when he finds it hard to concentrate.

Impact on Family and Friends

The former Made In Chelsea star reflected on how his diagnosis affected those closest to him, including his parents and sister, Louise. He recalled that his sister used to get annoyed at his restlessness after family dinners but tearfully apologized upon learning of his diagnosis. His mother, he said, has learned a great deal about ADHD through his journey.

Thompson also spoke about his best friend, Pete Wicks, whom he has known since 2017. They co-host the Staying Relevant podcast together. Thompson described Wicks as one of the most accepting people in his life, noting that Wicks has always championed him being himself and can tell when Thompson is masking his true feelings.

New Children's Book

Thompson has released a children's book titled You, Me and ADHD, which serves as a guide for young readers with the condition. He described it as a "how-to guide for a mini version of himself." The book includes tips and exercises for handling school, social media, and overstimulation. Thompson admitted to feeling nervous about entering the neurodiverse space but was inspired by a mother whose daughter felt seen after his discussions about ADHD.

He hopes the book will help children understand themselves better and provide strategies they might not have had otherwise. Thompson became emotional while recording the audiobook, as the ending was a nod to his younger self.

What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a behavioural condition characterized by inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness. It affects around five per cent of children in the US, with symptoms including constant fidgeting, poor concentration, excessive movement, and difficulty organizing tasks. Most cases are diagnosed between six and 12 years old. While there is no cure, a combination of medication and therapy is often recommended to manage symptoms.
