A coroner has concluded that a full-time carer for her severely disabled eight-year-old daughter killed herself and the child after becoming 'overwhelmed' by loneliness. Martina Karos, 40, and Eleni Edwards were found dead at their home in Salford, Greater Manchester, on 23 September 2024, after the girl failed to attend school.
Bolton Coroner's Court heard that Karos struggled with her mental health following a relationship breakdown and felt socially isolated while caring for Eleni, who was blind and had limited mobility. A friend described her as a 'good mother' who was 'very bright' and spoke multiple languages, but said she was 'stuck in a terrible place'.
Eleni had been placed on a child protection plan by Salford City Council in January 2024, and the family received extensive support, including daily visits from carers, social workers, respite care, counselling, and therapy. Social workers also accompanied Karos to social activities, but she struggled to form new friendships.
Area Coroner Peter Sigee concluded that Karos deliberately placed herself and Eleni in an environment where they were overcome by carbon monoxide, intending to end both their lives. He said Eleni was unlawfully killed, and that despite high-quality support, Karos's feelings of extreme loneliness overwhelmed her. He added that the tragedy could not have been reasonably foreseen.
