The Motability Foundation has extended its Bespoke Passenger Solutions (BPS) funding until March 2029, continuing support for disabled people who need specialist wheelchair-accessible vehicles.
Scheme details and impact
Since launching in 2022, the scheme has distributed £15 million through 475 grants, with 400 BPS vehicles currently supporting families across the UK. These vehicles include advanced facilities such as personal hoisting, changing spaces and storage to help people travel safely.
Grant Programme Manager Helen Rose said: "For disabled people with multiple and profound care needs, having the right facilities inside a vehicle can make a significant difference to everyday life."
Who benefits from the programme
The programme helps those on the broader Motability Scheme, which supports over 915,000 people exchanging disability benefits like PIP and DLA for vehicle leases. BPS specifically targets large wheelchair-accessible vehicles requiring extra facilities beyond basic access.
One family beneficiary, Teresa, whose 20-year-old son Tyler has spastic quadriplegic Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease, said: "We couldn't have afforded to purchase this without the help of this grant."
Evaluation and future outlook
The extension follows an evaluation showing BPS vehicles improve social connections, wellbeing and access to healthcare while reducing travel stress and risk for users and carers.
