Free Driving Lessons Available for PIP, ADP and DLA Claimants

People receiving the higher or enhanced rates of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Adult Disability Payment (ADP) or Disability Living Allowance (DLA) may be eligible for free driving lessons through the Motability Scheme's Driving Lessons Grant. The grant provides up to 40 hours of funded lessons with a local instructor, arranged via the AA Driving School, and can also cover familiarisation lessons for those who have received grants for driving adaptations.

Eligibility requires having a Motability Scheme vehicle or one arriving within the next four months, a provisional UK driving licence, a passed theory test, and receipt of a means-tested benefit such as Universal Credit, Income Support, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, or income-based Jobseeker's Allowance. The average learner driver needs 40–50 hours of lessons, so the grant could cover the full learning journey.

The grant does not cover all costs, and full details on eligibility and applications are on the Motability Scheme website. To join the scheme, you must have at least 12 months left on your qualifying mobility allowance. Lower rate allowances, Attendance Allowance, Carer's Allowance, and ESA do not qualify.

From 1 July, tax allowance changes will affect new scheme users, and existing leaseholders will see changes upon renewal. Most vehicles require an advance fee of £100–£2,000, though some have no fee. The package includes insurance, breakdown assistance, servicing, maintenance, tyres, and windscreen repairs.
