Real Madrid icon Roberto Carlos has undergone emergency heart surgery in Brazil after being hospitalised. The 52-year-old was on holiday with his wife and one of his children following the World Cup draw in the USA earlier this month.
According to Spanish outlet AS, Carlos was initially admitted to hospital due to a small blood clot in his leg. However, a full-body MRI subsequently detected a heart issue, necessitating urgent surgery to fit a tube. The operation, expected to last 40 minutes, took nearly three hours due to complications.
The 2002 World Cup winner is reported to be recovering well and will remain in hospital for 48 hours as a precaution. He told the publication via his entourage: “I’m fine now.”
Carlos, one of the most decorated defenders in football history, won three Champions League titles and four La Liga crowns with Real Madrid, as well as the 2002 World Cup with Brazil. He retired in 2016 after a stint with Delhi Dynamos.
