Roberto Carlos has emergency heart surgery

Brazilian football icon Roberto Carlos has undergone successful emergency heart surgery after being hospitalised with a serious cardiac issue. The 52-year-old former Real Madrid and Brazil defender is now reported to be "out of danger" following the three-hour procedure in Sao Paulo.

Medical Emergency and Surgical Complications

Roberto Carlos was admitted to hospital after medical tests revealed a small blood clot in one of his legs. A subsequent full-body MRI scan then identified that the legendary left-back's heart was not functioning correctly, prompting immediate medical intervention.

According to reports from Spanish outlet AS, doctors performed an emergency catheterisation procedure. While this operation typically takes around 40 minutes, complications arose during Carlos's surgery, extending it to approximately three hours. Medical representatives have confirmed the procedure was ultimately successful.

Successful Recovery and Current Condition

The former footballer's representatives told AS that Carlos is "fine now" following the operation. He will remain under medical observation for another two days as a standard precaution, but medical staff have confirmed he is no longer in immediate danger.

This health scare comes just weeks after Carlos appeared in good spirits at the World Cup draw ceremony in Washington DC on 5 December. At that event, he was seated alongside fellow Brazilian great Kaka and interviewed by host Danny Ramirez.

A Legendary Football Career

Roberto Carlos enjoyed one of football's most celebrated careers, winning numerous honours at both club and international level. His most notable achievements include:

  • Winning the 2002 FIFA World Cup with the Brazilian national team
  • Claiming three UEFA Champions League titles with Real Madrid in 1998, 2000, and 2002
  • Earning 125 caps for Brazil between 1992 and 2006

Famous for his powerful free-kicks and attacking prowess from left-back, Carlos remains one of the most recognisable figures in global football. The football community worldwide has expressed relief at news of his successful recovery from this serious health episode.
