David Van Day, best known as one half of the 1980s pop duo Dollar, is recovering after suffering a heart attack. The 59-year-old singer was taken to a hospital in Essex over the weekend following several days of chronic chest pain.
He was later transferred to St Bartholomew's Hospital in central London for treatment. A spokesman confirmed that Van Day has "had a stent fitted to [a] main artery". A stent is a small wire-mesh tube inserted into the artery to keep it open and allow blood to flow more freely.
The spokesman said the singer "should be leaving for home soon" but will need to rest for the next month. As a result, Van Day has cancelled all his scheduled appearances for November.
In a message on Twitter, Van Day wrote: "Thanks for all the kind and positive messages I've had today. I'm hoping to make a speedy recovery."
Van Day and Canadian-born Thereza Bazar formed Dollar in the late 1970s, scoring a string of hits including Mirror Mirror and Give Me Back My Heart. In 2008, he appeared on ITV's I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!, finishing in fourth place.
