Hit-by-car rescue dog Leon still waits two years for a home
Rescue dog Leon waits two years for a forever home

Leon, a rescue dog described as a 'gentle giant', has spent two years waiting for a forever home after being hit by a car and suffering serious injuries. Despite his striking looks, no one has come forward to adopt him.

Rescued after a hit-and-run injury

Leon, thought to be around five years old, was rescued from an industrial area after sustaining life-changing injuries when he was struck by a vehicle. A rescue worker from Greek Stray ResQ said: "In August 2024, Leon was found in an industrial area, having been hit by a car. His injuries were so serious that he very nearly lost the toes on one of his paws."

"Thankfully, he survived and recovered. But while his body healed, his life remained on hold. Leon has been living in a shelter ever since, waiting for someone to see beyond his size and recognise the wonderful dog he is," the worker added.

A 'movie star' appearance and gentle personality

Leon boasts striking, light amber-brown eyes with a deep, soulful and slightly brooding gaze, along with a rugged, shaggy coat of mixed tan tones that perfectly frame his adorable face. Rescue workers say there is "something special" about his personality too.

They added: "He's affectionate and enjoys human company, but he's also an independent soul. He doesn't demand constant attention or need to be the centre of everything. He's perfectly happy having his own space, relaxing quietly and enjoying life at his own pace. He's the kind of dog who will happily share your world without taking it over."

The perfect home for Leon

Leon needs an owner who understands what he needs and can provide him with a "comfortable bed, lovely walks, gentle companionship and somewhere he can finally feel that he belongs".

A rescue worker added: "After everything he has been through, surely he deserves more than shelter life? He isn't asking to be the centre of your universe. He just wants a little corner of it to call his own."

Commenting on his rehoming post, one user said: "Gorgeous Leon! I would adopt you if I had the space. Good luck." Another user added: "Come on, let's get him a home." Meanwhile, a third user said: "He's absolutely beautiful."
