Peace lilies can flower again quickly with two simple tasks, according to experts from Blooming Backyard. The advice focuses on deadheading faded blooms and repotting the plant when it has outgrown its container.
Deadheading to Preserve Beauty
The experts said: "Your peace lily flower can last for up to a month and then will turn yellow or green before eventually turning black or brown. Deadhead your peace lily flower at any stage to preserve the beauty of this plant."
This involves cutting away any faded flowers and any leaves that have started to brown and droop.
Repotting and Nutrient Boost
It may also be worthwhile to repot the houseplant, particularly if it has outgrown its current container. The experts suggested an excellent potting medium can be created at home by mixing two parts potting soil, one part perlite and one part coconut coir.
When planting, examine the pot you're working with, as peace lilies prefer to be slightly snug in their containers, with no roots protruding.
The experts said: "Nutrients are essential components in plant health, particularly if you want to encourage your plants to flower. Recently purchased peace lilies won't require feeding, but if they've been in the same pot for a while and have used up all the available nutrients, fertiliser or repotting is the only way to perk them up again."
Feeding and Environmental Care
Gardening specialists advise using a balanced fertiliser, applying it at least once every two months for the best results. For those with peace lilies displaying an abundance of green foliage, cutting back feeding to every three months — or slightly diluting the feed strength — is recommended.
While this adjustment may have little impact heading into the autumn and winter months, a noticeable improvement should become apparent come spring.
Weak flowers are another indicator of nutrient deficiency, according to gardening experts. Should blooms appear underdeveloped or poorly formed, switching to a high-phosphorus feed is advisable. The experts said: "This nutrient encourages flowering and fruiting in plants and should spur flowering in your peace lily too."
Additional methods for encouraging flowering include maintaining a warm environment and avoiding sudden temperature fluctuations. Keeping watering consistent and ensuring the houseplant is not left sitting in water is equally important. Much like orchids, peace lilies are particularly vulnerable to root rot, making it essential to keep the soil moist without allowing it to become waterlogged.
