Gardeners are being encouraged to repurpose tin cans as rustic herb planters instead of throwing them away. Garden expert Simon Akeroy, who shares tips on social media, suggests that empty cans from beans, soups, or lentils can be transformed into charming containers for herbs.
Simon advises thoroughly washing the cans and removing labels to ensure a clean look. He explains that leftover food residue can interfere with planting. After cleaning, he recommends drilling a few drainage holes in the bottom, which is crucial for healthy root growth. For hanging planters, a small hole on the side near the back is also helpful.
To create a hanging planter, Simon repurposed an old wire coat hanger, bending it to form hooks that fit into the side hole. This allows the tin to hang securely from a nail or trellis, adding rustic charm to a garden or patio. He filled the tins with peat-free compost and planted mint, parsley, and thyme, which he says thrive in containers and create a lovely, fragrant display.
Simon's followers praised the idea, with comments such as "Great idea" and "They look cute." The project promotes eco-friendly gardening practices and adds greenery to homes.
