Flooring specialists have discovered that a cheap kitchen staple can help keep wooden floors dust-free for longer while enhancing their natural warmth and shine. According to experts at All Kleen Carpet Cleaning Services, black tea is the secret ingredient.
Why Black Tea Works on Wooden Floors
Hard flooring is ideal for high-traffic areas, but it can accumulate grime and show wear over time. During warmer months, wooden floors generate static electricity, attracting dust from open windows. The tannins in black tea act as a light, warm stain that brings out the natural tones of hardwood, while polyphenolic compounds from the Camellia Sinensis plant attack germs and prevent their growth, the experts explained.
You can adjust the tea's potency to match your floor's colour. For lighter floors, use four to six tea bags; for dark hardwoods, use 10 to 12 tea bags. If the tea is too strong, dilute it with water; if too weak, add more bags.
Preparation Steps Before Mopping
Before applying tea, ensure the floor is completely free of dust and debris. Sweep thoroughly, then vacuum to remove every trace of grime. This step is crucial for the tea to adhere properly and avoid streaks.
Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning with Black Tea
Bring 1.9 litres of water to a boil in a large pot. Once boiling, remove from heat and steep eight black tea bags for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove the bags, squeezing out all liquid before discarding. Allow the tea to cool until barely warm to avoid damaging the floor's finish. To speed cooling, boil only half the water, steep the tea, then add eight cups of cold water.
When lukewarm, transfer the tea to a large bucket. Test it on an inconspicuous area, such as a corner. Dip a clean cloth into the tea, wring it out thoroughly (never saturate wood floors), and apply in the direction of the grain. Once satisfied with the colour, mop the entire floor using minimal liquid. Let the floor dry completely, and enjoy revitalised wooden flooring.
