Binman Warns: Coffee Cups Not for Home Recycling

A refuse collector, known as a 'binfluencer' on TikTok, has issued a warning to Brits about where to dispose of coffee cups – and it's not in home recycling bins. Ashley, the binman behind the advice, clarifies that most coffee cups cannot be recycled through standard household collections due to their plastic lining.

Why Coffee Cups Are Tricky

Recycling in the UK varies by council, and packaging labels can be misleading. Coffee cups often look like paper but are lined with plastic, making them difficult to process in standard facilities. Ashley explains: "They cannot be recycled in your household waste bin. Some councils might be different, but otherwise, no."

What to Do Instead

Ashley recommends returning used cups to the shop where they were purchased, especially at chains like Costa or Starbucks, which have dedicated recycling points. These cups are taken to specialist facilities that can separate the materials. He adds: "Most normal recycling facilities don't have the machines to do it, or it costs too much."

Public Reaction

While many find the advice useful, some express frustration. One user commented: "This really is getting a joke." However, proper recycling is crucial for environmental protection.

Recycle Now supports Ashley's guidance, stating: "Coffee cups are not normally accepted in household recycling but can be returned at some high street coffee shops. Better still, use a reusable cup."
