TikTok's No1 Binman has settled the debate on what to do with greasy takeaway containers, revealing that most fast food packaging cannot be recycled at home due to grease and food residue. The popular social media expert, known for answering public questions about rubbish disposal, addressed the issue after a follower asked about McDonald's meal packaging.
Only Clean Items Can Be Recycled at Home
The binman explained that only items completely free of food residue are suitable for home recycling. For fast food packaging, this means the carrier bag can go in paper recycling if it has no food stains, but containers, cups, and straws must go in general waste. Leftover food can be placed in the food waste bin.
He stated: "The containers, the cups, the straws, unfortunately, cannot be recycled within your household recycling bin. So you have to put that in your general waste."
Why Grease Damages Recycling Machinery
The reason heavily stained or greasy containers cannot be recycled is that they risk damaging machinery at collection centres. Recycling specialists at Recycle Right noted: "Cardboard that is stained with grease, food, paint, dirt, etc - is contaminated and should be thrown away in your rubbish bin. Remember to flatten boxes and remove all packing tape, and plastic inserts from cardboard packaging before recycling."
Dining In Makes Recycling Easier
If you eat inside the restaurant, recycling becomes more straightforward. The binman pointed out that on-site facilities are available, and waste will be taken to the right places if sorted into the correct bins. The rules apply to all fast food packaging, not just McDonald's, as most are made from paper or card but are often smothered in grease or sauces.
