A significant fire erupted at a recycling facility in south-east London on Monday evening, sending plumes of thick smoke across the skyline. Approximately 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines were deployed to combat the blaze at a building on Landmann Way in Bermondsey. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) also utilised two of its 32-metre turntable ladders to assist in extinguishing the flames. The cause of the fire is now under investigation by the LFB.
Travel Chaos Ensues
The inferno caused major travel disruption, with National Rail warning that services to, from, and through London Bridge were affected. Southeastern and Thameslink services faced cancellations, diversions, and revisions, with disruption expected to continue until at least 10.30pm. Some trains were brought to a standstill, while passengers were advised to allow extra journey time.
Fire Under Control
The LFB confirmed that the fire was brought under control shortly before midnight. Firefighters remained at the scene overnight to dampen down remaining hotspots. A spokesperson stated, 'There are currently no reports of any injuries. The cause of the fire is now under investigation.'
Public Safety Advice
Southwark Council urged local residents to keep windows and doors closed due to the significant smoke. Station Commander Wayne Bloomfield advised residents to pour water on any loose embers near their properties but to call 999 if anything catches alight.
Ongoing Investigation
The LFB confirmed that the cause of the blaze is under investigation. Fifteen fire engines attended the scene after multiple calls were received at around 5.30pm. A Hose Layer Unit was also deployed to support firefighting efforts by laying large-capacity hose lines over long distances.
Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene into the morning, with the incident described as 'protracted' by officials.
