The UK Government is working on new energy efficiency rules that would ban the sale of certain heating devices, including under-floor heating and towel rails. More than a third of 'space heating systems' would become illegal to sell under the proposals.
Details of the Proposed Ban
Devices would need heating and timing controls to operate efficiently for set hours only, according to reports. The changes follow similar EU restrictions and a planned tumble dryer ban from January 2027. Only highly efficient heat pump tumble dryers will be permitted for sale as new appliances.
Criticism from Shadow Energy Secretary
Shadow energy secretary Claire Coutinho criticised the plans, telling The Telegraph: "Ed Miliband wants to tell you how long your towel rail can be switched on."
Impact on Current Systems
The new rules would ban around half of current under-floor heating and towel rail systems. Between 17% and 27% of gas heaters would also be affected. The Government said the ban applies to new sales only, not existing systems. Towel rails would only be allowed to run for six hours daily under the proposals.
Government Statement
A Department for Energy Security and Net Zero spokesman said the reforms would "save households money by improving energy efficiency".
