UK Heatwave: Thousands of Pupils Miss School as Hundreds Close Due to Extreme Heat

Thousands of pupils across England and Wales are missing school this week as hundreds of schools close or send children home early due to extreme heat. Temperatures are expected to reach 40C by Wednesday, potentially breaking the June record set in Hampshire in 1976.

Regional Impact of School Closures

According to council figures, around 100 schools will be at least partially closed across Somerset over the next three days. Similar numbers are reported in Buckinghamshire, with approximately 90 closures in Oxfordshire and more than 80 in Gloucestershire. In Hampshire, about 35 schools are shut or running reduced hours, while the east London boroughs of Hackney and Barking and Dagenham have around 30 closures. More than 20 schools are affected in Worcestershire.

Many schools have cited red weather warnings and extreme heat as reasons for closures, noting that classrooms lack air conditioning and that travel to and from school could be hazardous in such high temperatures.

Union and Government Responses

Trade unions have urged schools to take action during the heatwave. Stacey Booth, GMB national officer, said: "No pupil or member of staff should be expected to learn or work in unsafe levels of heat. Once temperatures exceed 30C, schools should act quickly, use the cooler parts of the building, reduce physical demands, increase water breaks and make sensible adjustments to uniform and duties."

The NAHT school leaders' union and teachers' union NASUWT have called for school buildings to be modernised and for a legally binding maximum classroom temperature to be introduced.

The Department for Education stated that it does not typically recommend schools shut during hot weather, as attendance remains "the best way for pupils to learn and reach their potential." However, it added that school leaders should ensure they take "any steps necessary to make sure children are safe and comfortable," as outlined in guidance on keeping pupils safe.
