Safety fears over land stability at Cardiff Sainsbury's

Safety concerns have been raised over the stability of land at a Sainsbury's supermarket in Cardiff. Plans for urgent engineering works, which have now been approved, were submitted to Cardiff Council by the supermarket chain to secure the site at Excalibur Drive in Thornhill.

The measures follow the collapse of a wall to the north of the property. According to planning documents, the works include “associated groundworks, erection of a replacement boundary fence, and arboricultural works to trees, where necessary, to facilitate the implementation of the engineering works in the interest of safety”.

The application states that the proposed works are “essential to secure the safe repair and replacement of a collapsed party wall to the north of the site”.

The supermarket’s submission reads: “At present, the surrounding land has failed and remains unstable, necessitating immediate engineering intervention to restabilise the area and prevent any further ground movement.”

Documents indicate that some trees will need to be removed to allow safe access for the work. The loss of trees will be mitigated by planting replacement trees.

The officer’s planning report states: “It is considered that the proposal would not be overbearing or generally unneighbourly to justify concern for the local planning authority. It is envisaged that the proposal would not have any unneighbourly impact upon adjacent residential properties to the north at Woodlawn Way.”

The application later describes the works as “necessary to ensure safety, prevent further instability, and allow for the repair and replacement of the boundary structure”.
