Liverpool Smoke Warning: Wildfires Cause Hazy Skies

Residents across Liverpool are being urged to keep windows and doors closed on Sunday evening as smoke from wildfires in North Wales and Greater Manchester drifts into the city. The warning comes after a major incident was declared in North Wales following two significant blazes.

Smoke Origin and Firefighting Efforts

Firefighters are tackling two major fires in North Wales, one in Conwy and another in Gwynedd. The fire in the Sychnant Pass area has been burning since the morning, forcing some residents to evacuate nearby communities. Authorities have also advised residents in Penmaenmawr and Dwygyfylchi to close windows and doors. A second major incident broke out in the afternoon on a hillside above Bethesda.

In Greater Manchester, emergency services remain at Dovestone Reservoir after a large moor fire ignited on Saturday night, July 11. Crews from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service were called to the Saddleworth beauty spot at approximately 8:45 p.m. Smoke can be seen billowing into the sky for several miles, and the public has been advised to avoid the area. Those living nearby are told to keep all doors and windows closed.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service Response

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the wildfires in North Wales and Manchester are the source of the smoke seen across parts of Liverpool this evening. The service reported that its Fire Control operators are receiving a high volume of calls related to smoke and has advised nearby residents and businesses to close windows and doors.

Individuals with existing medical conditions are advised to keep medicine nearby and call NHS 111 if they experience adverse effects, the service added.

Public Advisory

Residents are encouraged to follow updates on the fires through the ECHO website's live blog. The situation remains ongoing, with firefighters continuing their efforts to contain the blazes.
