Samantha Niblett, the Labour MP for South Derbyshire, has launched a campaign titled 'Yes Sex Please, We’re British' aiming to make 2026 the 'summer of sex'. The initiative seeks to refocus political attention on sexual pleasure and orgasms, with the goal of preventing abuse and violence while raising awareness of how childbirth, menopause, and health conditions affect sexual satisfaction.
Niblett, a member of the Blue Labour wing of the party, has enlisted the help of 'sextech entrepreneur' Cindy Gallop, founder of the website MakeLoveNotPorn, which features consensual adult content. Gallop described the site as 'a turn-on' that helps people masturbate. The campaign hopes to secure a parliamentary debate in the autumn and hold an exhibition in Portcullis House featuring sex toys, pending security clearance.
The MP’s call for a greater focus on sexual wellbeing comes amid a backdrop of historical scandals involving MPs, including Boris Johnson’s multiple affairs and the discovery of pornographic images on a laptop belonging to former Tory minister Damian Green. Former MP Neil Parish also admitted to watching pornography in the Commons chamber after claiming he was trying to access a tractor website.
Niblett’s campaign has drawn attention to the potential benefits of sexual activity, even suggesting that it could help pensioners stay warm without relying on central heating, referencing her vote in favour of means-testing winter fuel payments. The initiative has been described as a 'noble quest' to bring a more open conversation about sex into British politics.
