Gardeners across the UK are being urged to tackle moss and dead grass in their lawns using a simple method from gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh. In a recent video, Titchmarsh demonstrated how to use a wire tooth rake to remove moss and dead grass, describing it as the 'simplest' approach.
While the method is straightforward, Titchmarsh admitted it is hard work. For those who prefer a less strenuous option, he suggested using a powered scarifier, which automatically pulls out moss and dead grass as it is pushed across the lawn like a mower.
Titchmarsh explained that moss grows faster than grass during winter, which is why it becomes so prevalent. Removing it now gives grass a chance to thrive in warmer weather. After raking or scarifying, he advises mowing the lawn.
To achieve a greener lawn, Titchmarsh recommends not cutting grass too short. He suggests setting the mower blade to one inch in summer and one and a half inches in very hot weather. 'The longer the grass blades, the greener the lawn will stay,' he said.
He also warned against watering lawns, noting that grass will recover quickly after rain. For a thick, healthy lawn, Titchmarsh recommends mowing at least once every two weeks, or weekly during mild weather with sufficient sunshine and rain.
