Massive Manatee Rescue Operation in Florida After Sea Cow Becomes Trapped in Storm Drain
A substantial 410-pound manatee, which became trapped in a Florida storm drain while searching for warmer waters, is now recuperating at SeaWorld Orlando following an extensive and coordinated rescue effort. The male sea cow was discovered during a survey in Melbourne Beach, prompting an immediate response from multiple emergency and conservation teams.
Multi-Agency Rescue Effort Mobilised for Stranded Marine Mammal
Fire rescue units, officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, representatives from the University of Florida, and even personnel from Jack's Wrecker Service were all deployed on Tuesday to extricate the 186-kilogram marine mammal from the confined storm drain. The operation was initiated after a city worker conducting surveys noticed the distressed animal in what is locally termed a "bethel box."
Melbourne Beach Vice Mayor Terry Cronin confirmed the sighting to local media, explaining that the discovery occurred during ongoing municipal improvements to the storm drain system across the coastal community.
SeaWorld Orlando Provides Critical Medical Care and Rehabilitation
The rescued manatee was promptly transported to SeaWorld Orlando, where it is currently receiving expert care in one of the park's specialised medical pools. According to park spokesperson Stephanie Bechara, the animal is showing promising signs of recovery.
"He's breathing independently, moving on his own, and beginning to show interest in food," Bechara stated. "Our veterinary teams are carefully adjusting water levels to support his buoyancy and overall comfort as part of the comprehensive rehabilitation process."
SeaWorld's established protocol focuses on stabilising and rehabilitating rescued manatees with the ultimate goal of returning them to their natural habitat. This incident highlights the ongoing conservation challenges facing Florida's manatee population.

This rescue occurs against the backdrop of a significant recovery effort for the protected species, which is still rebounding from a devastating mass starvation event. In 2021, wildlife officials documented over 1,100 manatee deaths, predominantly attributed to starvation due to seagrass depletion.
Recent data from the state's Fish and Wildlife agency indicates a positive trend, with recorded deaths decreasing substantially to 565 in 2024 and 555 in 2023. SeaWorld Orlando plays a crucial role in this conservation work, having rescued 56 manatees last year alone and already admitting seven animals for care in the current year.
