St Sophia's Primary School in Galston has officially reopened following a major refurbishment, achieving a UK first as the first school to receive EnerPHit certification, an international standard for outstanding energy improvements in existing buildings.
Official Reopening Ceremony
The school's new look was unveiled by Màiri McAllan MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Education, Culture and Gaelic, alongside Margaret McVie, a long-time member of the school community. Margaret started at St Sophia's as a primary one pupil in 1966 and returned as a cleaner in 1998, remaining until March 2023.
The guests were welcomed by piper Sajal and drummer Archie from Kilmarnock Academy, and Acting Head Teacher Claire Crawford with children from P6 and P7. The children performed two songs – The Blessing and Amazing Grace – before Father Erasmus Egenonu led a prayer.
Investment and Impact
Education Secretary Màiri McAllan said: "It was wonderful to be welcomed to the newly refurbished St Sophia's Primary School by pupils and the wider school community. Seeing the bright, modern spaces where they will be learning every day was truly inspiring."
The Scottish Government contributed £2.6 million to the project through its £2 billion Learning Estate Investment Programme. McAllan noted that 92% of Scottish schools are now rated in 'good' or 'satisfactory' condition, up from 62.7% in 2007.
Council's Commitment
Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of East Ayrshire Council, said: "I am very proud that East Ayrshire Council has led the way on this project and is the first authority in the UK to have an EnerPHit certified school. This means we have carried out a deep retrofit, transforming the energy efficiency of the existing building and working within the existing footprint and structure."
He added: "This is our twenty-third new build or fully refurbished educational facility that has been delivered since 2007, which is an incredible achievement." The council is committed to providing free school meals, clothing and footwear grants, and learning environments that help children achieve their full potential.
Community Tribute
At the opening, former Head Teacher Lizzie Heron presented a handcrafted banner commissioned from the Dean Castle Textile Team. The banner features an owl to signify wisdom, with the words Faith, Hope and Love, and is a lasting tribute to team member Grace Martin, who passed away last year.
