A refuse collector has shared advice on what to do when your wheelie bin is full, suggesting that households should contact their local council for an additional bin if recycling is constantly overflowing.
Contact your council for extra recycling bin
Ashley, who runs the No. 1 Binman account, was asked whether extra recycling should be placed in the general waste bin. He advised: "If your recycling bin is constantly getting full, I suggest you ring your council and say 'my recycling bin keeps getting full, what should I do with all the extra recycling?'"
He explained that in most cases, councils will provide an additional bin, adding: "It's cheaper for them to take recycling away than it is to take general waste away." He noted that if residents use bins correctly, councils are likely to offer another bin.
Rules on excess rubbish vary by council
Whether excess rubbish can be left next to the bin depends on the local authority. Ashley clarified: "It depends on your council, every council will say something different. Some will allow it, some won't." He said the authority he works for does not allow excess rubbish to be taken away, because if a bin is too full, it cannot be emptied safely.
If an additional bin is not available, Ashley advised taking rubbish to a recycling centre. He also recommended waiting until the bin is emptied before adding remaining waste. He emphasised: "Check your council, if they allow it, then you can and follow the guidelines they tell you."
