Stop Washing Duvets and Pillows: Sun Method Easier

Duvets and pillows are often the most difficult items to wash, but a quick and easy method using sunlight can refresh your bedding without a washing machine. Steven Szary, of My Luxury Sleep Shop, recommends letting the sun do the work.

How to Air Your Duvet and Pillows

Steven advised: "Leave your duvet out for several hours (four to five is about right) and it's best to do it in the late afternoon or early evening when the sun isn't too harsh. A little bit of sun is good, though, as it helps to kill unwanted bacteria and germs." Harnessing sunlight's natural disinfecting qualities efficiently rids bedding of bacteria and dust mites.

A build-up of sweat, body oils and dust can become lodged within bedding, making regular airing essential to avoid mould growth, reports the Express. Hanging the duvet allows improved airflow and warmth to penetrate the fabric, banishing musty odours and reinvigorating its filling, ultimately improving sleep quality.

Timing and Weather Conditions

Before treating your duvet to a natural refresh, choose a bright, breezy day following a spell of dry weather, Steven insisted. He noted: "If it's cloudy or has rained recently, the air will be more humid and will not be as effective for airing out your bedding." Once ideal conditions are identified, bring your duvet outside during the late afternoon. The gentler sunlight helps preserve the fabric and prevents stiffness.

Steps for Airing

Before hanging, give your duvet and pillows a thorough shake. Once the duvet is firmly in position, lightly beat the fabric to loosen fibres and prevent clumping. Ideally, suspend the duvet on a washing line. If unavailable, drape it across a drying rack, fence or any clean surface, provided it is adequately secured. Pillows can be placed on an outdoor airer or a clean, flat surface.

Leave both items out in the sunshine for four to five hours. After this period, your bedding will be thoroughly refreshed and sanitised, ready for a more restful night's sleep.
