A delightful photograph captured in the wild shows a squirrel sharing a dandelion with its companion. The image was taken in the grasslands of Lower Austria by wildlife photographer Perdita Peltz.
Foraging for Winter Survival
Ground squirrels spend extensive hours foraging for food to build up their fat reserves, which are crucial for surviving the winter. While the photograph may appear to depict the creatures appreciating the spring bloom, they were actually on the hunt for the tastiest flowers available.
During hibernation, squirrels utilize approximately 90 per cent of the body fat they accumulated over the summer months. This makes their foraging efforts essential for their survival through the cold season.
A Rare Sibling Bond
The 50-year-old photographer noted that the squirrels in the picture are young siblings who still share their food with one another. Peltz managed to capture this rare moment of the pair sharing the bright flower in an endearing display of cooperation.
She explained: 'It took a while to get these photos, as this behaviour is not common to see and the squirrels are very elusive. My patience paid off though, as I got these really fun shots of the siblings sharing a dandelion together, something that makes me smile every time I see the images.'
The image serves as a heartwarming reminder of the bonds that exist in the animal kingdom and the intricate behaviors that support their survival.
