After a week of unbearable temperatures reaching up to 40°C across much of the UK, the weather is finally set to break tonight. To maximize your chances of a good night's sleep, experts recommend a technique called 'flushing' your house to rapidly cool it down.
Create a Cross Breeze
Wait until the temperature outside is lower than inside. Then, open windows on opposite sides of your house to create a cross breeze that flushes hot, trapped air out. If you have a loft hatch, open it as well—hot air rises, so this acts like a chimney to expel heat.
Use Fans Strategically
Instead of pointing a fan directly at yourself, place it a few feet back from an open window and face it outward. This pulls hot air out of the room. Position a second fan on the shadier side of the house, facing inward, to draw cooler air inside.
Unplug Unused Appliances
Televisions, computers, and chargers generate ambient heat even when not in use. Unplug them to reduce heat buildup. Avoid using the oven; opt for lighter, cooler meals or cook outdoors.
By following these steps, you can rapidly lower your indoor temperature and improve comfort after a heatwave.
