A 'significant' wildfire continues to rage on Tintwistle Moor near Glossop, sending huge plumes of smoke into the air. The fire broke out around 10pm on Wednesday evening (June 24) and has spread across approximately 400 metres-squared of moorland and woodland, according to Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service.
Emergency Response and Advice to Public
Six fire engines, a water carrier, and a welfare unit are on the scene, supported by crews from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service. Firefighters from Chapel-en-le-Frith, Buxton, Hathersage, Glossop, Hyde, and Stalybridge stations are working alongside partners from the Peak District Fire Operations Group (FOG), including Peak Park rangers, the Eastern Moors Partnership, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), and United Utilities.
Residents are urged to avoid the area and keep windows and doors shut if they can see or smell smoke. The fire service stated: "Six fire engines supported by a water carrier and welfare unit are now in attendance on Tintwistle Moor... This is a significant fire affecting approximately 400 metres squared of moorland and woodland. Please continue to follow advice."
Local MP Highlights Wildfire Vulnerability
Jon Pearce, MP for High Peak, expressed concern over the blaze, noting that High Peak is the most wildfire-vulnerable constituency in the UK. In a Facebook post, he said: "I'm saddened to see the wildfire on Tintwistle Moor... My thanks go to Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service who have worked through the night in challenging conditions to keep people safe." He urged residents to take extra care during the hot, dry weather and follow emergency services' advice.
The fire service confirmed that crews are working in challenging conditions, with temperatures remaining high on Thursday. The cause of the wildfire is under investigation.
