UK tourists have been issued a warning as a severe heatwave sweeps across Europe, with temperatures in Majorca reaching a blistering 49C. Weather maps from WXCHARTS show Europe covered in deep red, indicating extreme heat across France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, and Portugal.
Heatwave Deaths and Dangers
In France, at least 40 people have died in heatwave-related incidents. The Majorca Daily Bulletin reports that walking through treeless streets at midday has become dangerous for the elderly and children, raising concerns for residents' safety. Scientists warn that this extreme heat is a significant problem for Europe and a wake-up call to a new climate reality, according to CNN.
Europe's Rising Temperatures
Europe is the fastest-warming continent on the planet, heating at about two to three times the global average. However, it has been described as “unprepared” for its new climates. Spain is particularly exposed to the effects of climate change, more than almost any other European country, reports the BBC. Aemet, Spain's state weather service, says June heatwaves are becoming increasingly common, with 10 recorded in mainland Spain between 2000 and 2025, compared to just two in the previous 25 years.
Temperatures Across the UK and Europe
In the UK, WXCHARTS maps show temperatures reaching up to 35C in London, 28C in the Midlands, and 22C in northern England. Scotland saw slightly cooler highs of 24C, while Wales recorded up to 30C and Northern Ireland around 23C. Elsewhere in Europe, Italy reached about 33C in Bari, Austria saw highs of around 32C, and Hungary, Slovakia, and Switzerland also recorded highs of 32C.
Preparedness and Adaptation
The European Environment Agency says Europe has made important progress in preparing for climate change, with many countries adopting national adaptation policies. However, its latest report finds that while progress is being made, turning plans into action remains a challenge. It emphasizes that stronger implementation, better monitoring, and closer coordination are needed to build climate resilience across Europe.
