UK Heatwave: Prepare Shopping List for 30C

The Met Office has indicated that a heatwave could arrive early next week, with temperatures potentially reaching 30C in parts of southeast England. This has prompted health experts to advise households, especially those with vulnerable individuals, to update their shopping lists accordingly.

Met Office Forecast

According to the Met Office, temperatures are expected to build over the weekend, with highs in the high 20s°C across parts of England and Wales. Tony Wisson, a Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster, stated: "The forecast for this weekend suggests that temperatures could approach high 20s°C across parts of England, perhaps 30°C in parts of the southeast, with values of mid to high 20s°C in Wales. Although a return to heatwave conditions is looking increasingly likely for some areas, the likelihood of such extreme high temperatures or high levels of humidity as last week is currently low."

Health Risks and Vulnerable Groups

The NHS warns that heatwaves pose serious health risks, particularly for babies, young children, and older people. Those with certain health conditions, such as heart problems, diabetes, and kidney disease, are also at increased risk. The British Heart Foundation emphasizes that hot weather can strain the heart, as blood vessels dilate and blood pressure drops, potentially leading to complications for those with cardiovascular disease.

Preparing Your Shopping List

To mitigate risks, the British Heart Foundation recommends drinking plenty of fluids and eating cold foods during heatwaves. "Water is best but milk, sports drinks, diluted squash, fruit juice, tea, and coffee all count," the charity advises. For those with fluid restrictions, such as heart failure patients, consulting a GP or heart failure nurse is recommended. Cold foods with high water content, like salad and fruit, can help keep the body cool and provide essential vitamins and minerals.

As such, households are encouraged to check their fridge and stock up on drinks and cold foods ahead of the expected hot weather. The British Heart Foundation notes: "Food with a high water content such as salad or fruit can help keep you cool, and are great sources of vitamins and minerals."

General Advice

While the advice targets those with heart conditions, anyone can be affected by heatwaves. The NHS advises seeking medical attention if health concerns arise during hot weather. With temperatures potentially hitting 30C, updating your shopping list now can help ensure you stay cool and hydrated.
