UK Heatwave: 'Heat-Dome' Brings Near-Record Temperatures of 40C
UK Heatwave: 'Heat-Dome' Could Bring 40C Temperatures

A 'heat-dome' settling over western Europe threatens to bring temperatures of up to 40C to the UK by Wednesday, coming close to the all-time high of 40.3C recorded in July 2022, the Met Office has warned.

Scorching Conditions Across the Country

People across the UK sought ways to cool down as temperatures soared. While some enjoyed the sunshine at beaches like Cullercoats Bay in North Tyneside and New Brighton Beach in The Wirral, others avoided going outside. Swimmers and paddleboarders were seen at Tynemouth and Cullercoats Bay, while in London, people sheltered under umbrellas on Westminster Bridge and used fans to stay cool.

Red Weather Warning Issued

The Met Office issued a red weather warning for extreme heat covering an area from London to Swansea and Somerset to Birmingham. The warning highlights that the temperature value is only one element; high humidity will make the intense heat even harder to endure.

The extreme weather has already caused major disruption to the travel network, and scores of schools have announced they will close for the next few days.

Public Response and Safety Measures

People were seen hydrating themselves and seeking shade. A topless man wearing a baseball cap backwards was photographed hydrating in the extreme heat. Sunrise at Tynemouth offered a brief respite before the day warmed up.

The Met Office emphasised the importance of remembering that humidity plays a key role, making the heatwave particularly challenging.
