UK Heatwave: 5 Tips to Keep Your Child Safe in 37°C Heat

Britain has recorded its hottest June day ever, with temperatures topping 36.4°C in Yeovilton, Somerset, smashing a record set only the previous day. A red weather warning for extreme heat has been extended into Friday for Southeast England, with forecasts of 37°C in some areas. Experts are now urging parents to take precautions to keep children safe.

Five Top Tips for Keeping Children Safe During the Heatwave

When temperatures exceed 30°C, prolonged exposure without shade or water risks heatstroke, dehydration, and hyperthermia. Dr. Raquel Nunes of the University of Warwick explained: "What actually makes a child vulnerable is the situation around them; whether there's a cool space, water and an adult paying attention, and whether they're being pushed into hard physical activity in the heat."

  • Provide a cool environment: Ensure children have access to shaded or adequately cooled indoor spaces to regulate body temperature.
  • Keep them hydrated: Have plenty of fresh drinking water readily available and encourage frequent drinking.
  • Supervise them closely: A responsible adult should actively monitor children for signs of heat stress.
  • Limit physical activity: Avoid strenuous games or sports during uncomfortably hot conditions.
  • Be ready to change plans: Adjust school or daily routines based on how hot the specific environment gets.

Water Safety Warnings Amid Tragic Drowning Incidents

A 15-year-old boy is feared dead after going missing while swimming in a lake in Hampshire. This follows 19 water-related deaths in one week during the record-breaking heatwave from May 24 to 31. The Mirror's Save Lives for Sam campaign, named after Sam Haycock who drowned at Ulley Reservoir in 2021, calls for urgent action. From September, water safety education will be compulsory in Relationships and Sex and Health Education (RSHE) lessons. Education Secretary Ms. Phillipson urged schools: "Please don't delay. Save Lives for Sam today."
