Twin Earthquakes Devastate Venezuela: 7.5 and 7.2 Magnitudes

Two Major Earthquakes Strike Venezuela Within Minutes

Two powerful earthquakes, a magnitude 7.5 and a magnitude 7.2, struck within minutes of each other near Caracas, Venezuela, on Thursday, causing buildings to collapse and prompting predictions of high casualties and extensive damage. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the first quake at 2204 GMT, a magnitude 7.2 with an epicentre 21 kilometres west of the coastal town of Moron. Within a minute, a magnitude 7.5 quake struck approximately 45 kilometres away.

Widespread Damage and Casualties Expected

The USGS stated that high casualties and extensive damage are probable, and the disaster is likely widespread. In the Altamira neighbourhood of Caracas, a building collapsed, and rescue efforts are continuing through the night. The quakes struck at 1804 local time, and many Venezuelans were at home because it was a public holiday.

State of Emergency Declared

Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, announced a state of emergency on state TV, urging the population to remain calm and united. She reported that the country’s main airport had been closed after suffering severe damage, and the metro and train systems had been halted. Rodríguez called on doctors, nurses, and other health workers to report to their work stations amid fears of a potentially large number of casualties.
