A simple pre-wash soak can remove yellow stains from white clothing, according to a recent test by a deputy editor. Yellow stains, often caused by sun cream, deodorant, sweat, and skincare products, commonly appear around collars, under armpits, and on sleeves. The test used Vanish Oxi Action Crystal White, a chlorine- and bleach-free whitener and stain remover, which costs £3.98 at Sainsbury's. The product claims to make clothes 'up to three shades whiter'.
How to Pre-Treat White Garments
Vanish Oxi Action Crystal White can be used in three ways: in the wash, as a pre-treatment, or as a soak. The most effective method for stained clothes is to soak them in warm water (not exceeding 40°C) with half a scoop of the powder for several hours. For two litres of water, half a scoop is recommended; for four litres, one scoop. The garments should be stirred frequently during the soak, which can last up to six hours.
In the test, the editor filled her kitchen sink halfway with warm water and added half a scoop of powder before submerging two small garments. She left them to soak for three to four hours, occasionally stirring, while attending to other household tasks.
Washing and Results
After soaking, the garments were placed in a washing machine with regular laundry detergent and conditioner, along with other white items. An additional scoop of Vanish Oxi Action was added to the detergent drawer. The machine was set to 30°C for one hour. The clothes were then dried on a rack until completely dry.
The results showed that stains around the collars of both the editor's top and her husband's T-shirt completely disappeared. The garments appeared whiter and brighter compared to older white items not treated with this formula. However, underarm stains persisted and may require a stronger stain remover for full removal.
