King Charles has been thanked by a Brazilian indigenous chief for highlighting the impact of deforestation in the Amazon during a reception for his environmental charity, the Circular Bioeconomy Alliance (CBA), at St James’s Palace in London.
Chief Raoni Metuktire, a Kayapo leader thought to be around 93 years old, addressed the King in his native language via a translator, saying he had waited a long time to speak to him. He placed his hand on Charles and expressed gratitude for helping indigenous people by drawing attention to environmental issues affecting the Amazon, such as deforestation.
The King, who patted Chief Raoni on the shoulder in response, said: “We’re doing our best.” Charles also briefly spoke to human rights campaigner and former actress Bianca Jagger before viewing 16th and 17th century ornaments and 18th century books about the natural world.
The CBA, founded by Charles when he was Prince of Wales in 2020, promotes nature-based approaches to economic decision-making. The event brought together scientists, business leaders, and indigenous representatives to discuss environmental challenges.
